Smashin' Sushi

Jai Yen is an excellent find for Chicago's sushi scene where it can be difficult to come across a restaurant whose rolls are made with seafood of quality comparable to that of coastal joints fortunate enough to have access to the freshest ingredients. The Spider Maki ($7.95) with soft shell crab, cucumber, avocado, spicy mayo, masago, and unagi sauce, along with the Dragon Roll ($12.95) made of shrimp tempura, spicy mayo, tempura crunch topped with unagi, avocado and unagi sauce have proven to be two of their tastiest options.

For those who just can't seem to get into this sushi thing, Jai Yen also offers a number of salads, soups, tempura, noodles and fried rice, as well as entrees. Prices range from a $2 bowl of Miso Soup to $13.95 for a few of the restaurant's "Super Specials" (the highest priced items on the menu). These delicious eats can be ordered for carry-out or delivery, but I'd recommend dining-in to enjoy your meal in the comfortable yet modern atmosphere decorated with cool, calm colors with a relaxing effect when combined with the dimmed lights overhead—I expect to find this restaurant to be a peaceful oasis for escaping from the impending winter gloom.

Located just past Wrigley Field, Jai Yen is a short, ten minute ride north on the 8 bus from DePaul Campus or an 8 minute walk (as so conveniently calculated by Google Maps) from the Addison Red Line stop. Stumble on over to their web site to find some enticing pictures of their sushi and entrees, the full menu, coupons, and online ordering for when the going back out in that weather is just not an option (20% off your first online order). Next time you and your friends are looking for a contemporary sushi dinner to kick off your weekend activities, be sure to stop at Jai Yen for some rolls you'll surely enjoy or just pass through for a quick, inexpensive bite between obligations. Jai Yen Sushi & Noodle: 3734 N. Broadway, (773) 404-0555
