Neon

Despite the bipolar weather our fine city has experienced so far this winter, it seems as though the bitter cold has finally taken reign over Chicago. When heading down the street it's not surprising to see almost all city dwellers hiding behind layers of shapeless down, only proving that winter is the season for functionality rather than fashion. While the sheer idea of blending into a sea of puffy, knee-length coats would make any true trendsetter cringe, most turn to accessories to pump up their monotonous winter uniform.

To break up the inevitable winter blues, neon accessories can add a powerful punch with a practical price tag. Pick up a skinny patent neon belt from the Gap ($25) or combine two trends with a simple neon and gold collar necklace from Urban Outfitters ($28). If this trend speaks to your inner fashion maven, investing in a pair of shockingly bright lo pro Vans ($45) or a fluorescent circle scarf from American Apparel ($28) may be your winter staple. While the neon trend is easy to execute, the trick to avoid resembling a certain Vegas sign seen on the corner of Webster and Sheffield is to pair the eye-catching accessories with basic heather or charcoal grays. While no one can prevent the infamous Chicago cold, any stylish city slicker will make the most of the drab scenery by adding their own pop of color.
