The DePaulia got to sit down with the Blue Demon formally known as DIBS. DIBS is played by multiple DePaul studens whose job is to pump up the crowd at DePaul events.
How did you get your name?
My mother named me "Billy", the Blue Demon. But a few years ago, the University decided to call me DIBS: Demon in a Blue Suit. They felt it was more appropriate for our new school logo. Mother was not pleased.
Why is DIBS the perfect DePaul mascot?
St. Vincent was all about helping the community. I make people laugh, and they say laughter is the best medicine…so in a way I'm not only a great mascot, I'm saving lives.
What are some of the more awkward times to be DIBS?
I always feel bad with little kids are spooked out by my appearance. Even with my demonically handsome face, I tend to intimidate some of the younger ones. Oh, and dogs. Why are they always barking at me? I don't get it.
What is your favorite time to be DIBS?
When I'm hanging out with the students. I always enjoy taking pictures, giving high fives, and throwing popcorn around. Also, talking to everyone online can be hilarious. Follow me @DepaulDIBS for twitter, and just my name for Facebook.
What do you think DIBS gives to DePaul?
I bring a sense of personality and entertainment to our Athletics program. Even though we're all fun and competitive, it's always a blast being a goofball while watching a game. Whenever DIBS is around, you're in for a laugh. And hopefully a win.
How old are you?
Depends…are we talking in mascot years, or in human years?
Who is your mascot hero?
If cereal box mascots don't count, I would have to go with Benny the Bull. Even though we're good friends, we always argue about who has the shiniest horns in Chicago.
What's the best thing about DePaul fans?
I love the energy they bring to a game. My best memories are always in the middle of the student section, jumping and dancing with the crowd. It gets rowdy, but never fails to amuse.
What's the worst thing about DePaul fans?
They're always pulling my tail….physically, not literally. And it's painful. Took me years to grow, but it takes seconds to yank.
What are the best ways to be a superfan?
Always support, and always believe. Come out to the games with a few friends, and make it an enjoyable night! The athletes always tell me that they play best when a bunch of loud DePaulians are cheering them on. We got a big Homecoming week ahead of us, so be loud and LETS GO BLUE!
