Freeland, Brooks ruled out for 2011-2012 season

DePaul announced late Friday afternoon that junior forward Tony Freeland and freshman guard Macari Brooks will miss the 2011-2012 men's basketball season.

A DePaul statement said Freeland, a native of Los Angeles, has "instability" in his right shoulder that will require season-ending surgery. He will have two season of eligibility remaining, starting with the 2012-2013 season.

Freeland played all 31 games last season and ranked among league leaders in rebounding and offensive rebounds in Big East play.

Freshman Macari Brooks will not be able to play this season after a ruling by the NCAA Eligibility Center. Brooks received partial reflief through the waiver process after his initial eligibility was denied, according to the statement. The ruling allows the 6-2 guard to attend DePaul with full financial aid, but is not compete during the 2011-2012 season.

Brooks was coming into this season after finishing his high school career at Rich South, where he earned second team Illinois All-State honors from the Associated Press and Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.
