For those who've followed the race for the 2012 Republican Presidential nomination, it must seem as if things have digressed from Barnum and Bailey to the final scene from Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs." There are now three or four desperate men ready to do unspeakable things to each other in order to win the nomination.
Mitt Romney is the front runner, having won in Iowa and New Hampshire, something no Republican has ever accomplished without being a sitting president. The caravans are packed and heading to the Palmetto State of South Carolina. You're going to want to follow closely because the Super-PACs are about to unleash their full fury on Romney. These political action committees can spend whatever they wish on attack ads and answer to no one. One of the PACs, called Winning Our Future, supports Gingrich and plans to spend $3.4 million to attack Romney in South Carolina. Romney's work at Bain Capital, a private equity firm he was in charge of 20 years ago, will draw the most fire.
It's somewhat comical that Romney's challengers will attack him as a "Corporate Raider" whose company made billions by buying distressed companies and selling them off piecemeal while shedding thousands of jobs here and there. Rich Republicans attacking an even richer (Romney's net worth is around $250 million) Republican for being a capitalist must have Ayn Rand rolling in her grave. This strategy will also serve as a template for President Obama's campaign.
Ron Paul has been polling a solid second in South Carolina and is receiving Tea Party support and the protest vote from the younger crowd. A strong showing for Paul is good for Romney because it siphons votes away from conservatives for Gingrich and Santorum.
If Romney wins the nomination, which is looking more and more inevitable, President Obama's campaign will seek to paint Romney as a member of that "one percent" we've heard so much about recently. Class warfare will be the central theme of the Presidential campaign. The American people will decide whether they want Mr. Romney or President Obama to lead the other 99 percent of us.
