Obama's birth control order oppressive

The Obama administration has directly attacked a core belief of the Catholic Church: the stance against the use of contraceptives.

In order to ensure equal health care distribution to all, the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced on Jan. 20 that it is mandating coverage of contraceptives for all, including Catholic and other religious employers. Many Church leaders are aghast at the order, seeing it as an attack on their First Amendment right to freely practice religion. The Obama Administration is overstepping its bounds in declaring war on a sacred belief of the Church and humanity itself.

The Church has officially been against the use of contraceptives since 1968 when Pope Paul VI released the encyclical "On the Regulation of Birth." In this encyclical, the Church outlines its stance against any type of contraception. It says the use of contraceptives results in the lowering of moral standards by turning sex into a meaningless act and by potentially making men reduce the role of women to an instrument for male sexual desires. The encyclical, although controversial, has withstood the test of time and continues to be the foundation of the Church's stance on the use of contraceptives. Now, that doctrine is under attack.

After issuing the order, Sebelius went on to say, "I believe this proposal strikes the appropriate balance between respecting religious freedom and increasing access to important preventive services. I feel that the declaration undermines the separation of Church and state and does not respect religious freedoms."

The Church has refused to bend to the whims of the Obama Administration. Archbishop Timothy Dolan, to whom Obama delivered the news earlier last week, lashed out at the decision.

"In effect, the president is saying we have a year to figure out how to violate our consciences," he said.

This issue is yet another example of the Obama Administration overstepping its bounds. The order is a blatant violation of the First Amendment, and it putting Catholics between a rock and a hard place. The battle has just begun as the order will certainly be sent to the courts where the war will be decided.

For the sanctity of life and the First Amendment, it is a war we must win.

I am a Healthcare Administrator at a Catholic church and cannot agree more with the author of this piece. According to the Catholic church, contraceptive use and abortion is wrong. Plain and simple. To aggressively attack Catholic churches telling them to go against their conscience is wrong. Catholics are under attack and have been under attack because of their firm stance on abortion and contraceptives. To be attacked by the government for their standing shows how pathetic this Obama administration really is. Let me put it this way, you don't see government demanding that Jewish hospitals serve pork do you? No. They have their beliefs and we have ours. Yet, Obama feels the need to put his foot in the door and demand that Catholic hospitals change their way of thinking. Who pays for all this anyway? Being a practicing Catholic I feel that it is absurd that I, as a taxpayer, have to pay for this and for abortion (or let's just call it murder). If you want contraceptives, go to a hospital that will give them to you. As sad as it is to see the way this world works, it would be nice for the Catholic hospitals to practice their faith through medicine and for Obama to go attack far more important issues (possibly digging us out of the extra $4 trillion dollars in debt that he put us in). And even if this author did put an emphasis on being pro-Catholic church, he should have anyway. This is a Catholic school isn't it?

"... on a sacred belief of the Church and humanity itself."

The morals of a society frequently change over time. Ancient Greeks and Romans thought it was divine to engage in anal sex with other men. I fail to see how contraceptives are against some sort of unbreakable tenant of humanity when people have been having pre-marital sex and sex without the intent of conception for thousands of years-- heck, there have been a number of popes in the 15th and 16th centuries that engaged in sex themselves.

"It says the use of contraceptives results in the lowering of moral standards by turning sex into a meaningless act and by potentially making men reduce the role of women to an instrument for male sexual desires."

Right, because a church that offers no authoritative role for women in its hierarchy has any right to complain about the subjugation of women. I would argue that this type of thinking is outdated, considering the sex-driven culture we live in. People will have sex no matter how many fingers are wagging at them, so we might as well give them the tools to be safe about it. It's been proven that abstinence-only sex education is not as effective in preventing teen pregnancy than methods that include contraception discussion, so why should we rely solely on the morality of the populace?

"The order is a blatant violation of the First Amendment..."

As stated by another commenter, the Obama Administration isn't forcing people to use contraceptives-- just to provide them in case, God forbid, someone is driven to engage in sexual intercourse. The simple act of offering contraceptives to the few people that request them is no more a violation of the First Amendment than the uttering of "under God" during the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools.

It's my opinion that this author of this piece does not account for the rights of non-Catholic people that work for Catholic organizations, and non-Catholics as a whole.

Anybody who starts an arguement with "bahah" is obviously the voice of reason.

Obama isn't forcing people to take contraceptives. Idiots.
What do you have against healthy sex and common sense?
