One resident was killed and ten others were injured in the 3100 block of Lake Shore Drive Sunday morning after a 21-story apartment caught fire on the twelfth floor.
"When I opened the door there was no way to get out," German Rubio, 41, a resident on the 11th floor said. "The hallway was so filled with smoke that people were still yelling for help out their windows forty minutes into the fire."
Hours after the fire, residents, cats and dogs waiting in a nearby building waiting for the apartment to be cleared. According to several residents, firefighters were quick to respond.
After she heard bangs from people trying to leave the building and the smell of smoke, eighth-floor resident Sarah Kinselle said she knew there was a fire. Kinselle said she could smell smoke and that people were yelling for help out their windows.
The Chicago fire department is currently investigating what caused the fire.
