US celebrates 40th anniversary of the 26th Amendment

The Vietnam War and the minimum voting age were both key political issues in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Emotional images like this young child in a stroller frequently appeared in newspapers and magazines articles trying to persuade members of Congress to lower the voting age.
In the last presidential election, 18-to 24-year-old voters had the lowest turnout rate (49 percent) of the eligible voting age groups. However, the youngest voters were the only age group were the only voters to show an increasing voter turnout.
