Virginia Tech put on lockdown after police officer, 1 other killed in campus shooting

The school said a police officer pulled someone over for a traffic stop and was shot and killed. The shooter ran toward a nearby parking lot, where a second person was found dead.

4:22 p.m.: State police: Va. Tech shooter was not the person pulled over during traffic stop

3:41 p.m.: Va. Tech says there is no longer a threat on campus, says normal activities can resume

3:36 p.m.: Law enforcement official tells AP that Virginia Tech gunman is believed to be dead.

2:31 p.m.: Virginia Tech officials say a police officer and another person have been shot and killed on the school's campus.

The suspect remains on the loose.

A news release from the school says the police officer had pulled someone over in what was a routine traffic stop Thursday. The officer was shot and killed during the traffic stop.

Witnesses told police the shooter ran toward a parking lot on campus. A second person was found dead in that parking lot.

Virginia State Police will be taking over the investigation, according to the news release.
