Anthony Bourdain, a prominent food critic, dubbed the city of Chicago as home of the “Greatest sandwich in America.” Bourdain stumbled upon this sandwich, cleverly titled the Three Little Piggy, at 768 N. Milwaukee Avenue, not too far from the DePaul Lincoln Park campus. Here stands a train-cart inspired restaurant, The Silver Palm.

Upon entering The Silver Palm, dim lighting and a casual atmosphere take over. Delectable aromas immediately bless your smell and rock music can be heard throughout the restaurant. Stairs lead to a bar area that is occupied by customers of all ages, who all seem to be enjoying themselves whether drinking, eating, or enjoying the friendly ambiance. Hidden behind a narrow hallway lies the small but unique restaurant area itself. When setting foot into the restaurant, one has literally left the building. The eatery part of The Silver Palm is in an old train cart decorated with lights and pictures that make for a small-town restaurant feel.

The best part about The Silver Palm is not it’s one-of-a-kind layout, but rather, as Bourdain said, that is it home to the best sandwich in America. Created by a bartender on a slow night, there are three types of meat on this sandwich, which give the sandwich its name, “Three Little Piggy.” Each savory bite delivers extremely tender double smoked ham, deliciously breaded pork tenderloin, two strips of crunchy bacon, two fried eggs and melted Gruyere cheese. All of these impeccably crafted ingredients are served on a perfectly toasted bun with a side of freshly made, salty fries.

Clearly the Three Little Piggy sandwich is a tasty mouthful. This sandwich is so enormous that most customers typically eat it in halves because it won’t fit in their mouths when left whole. For a price of $13.95, buyers are certainly getting a bang for their buck. It’s not every day that Anthony Bourdain christens a sandwich the best sandwich in America, and for a such a reasonable price there is no reason to not head over to the Silver Palm and to indulge in America’s greatest sandwich.
