As unappealing as grocery shopping is during the cold winter months, it may pay off to explore options other than the pricey Lincoln Park Dominick's. Students should consider new stores such as Trader Joe's, Wal-Mart Express and Target for their everyday needs.
If you are looking for a different shopping experience, go to Trader Joe's. The employees wear Hawaiian shirts, and the cashiers call for assistance the old-fashioned way—by ringing bells. Trader Joe's is anything but a typical grocery store. In addition to the atmosphere, the products themselves make for a good grocery shopping experience.
"The produce is great, and their prices are really affordable," said Ariana Velle, a frequent shopper at Trader Joe's. In addition to the prices, Velle also appreciates the selection of goodies.
"My absolute favorite part about Trader Joe's is their candy/dessert selection," she said.
This store is also great for people who live alone because most of their packaged products contain fewer servings, making it ideal for singles.
Vegetarian and vegan options, as well as animal-friendly and eco-friendly products are available. A bottle of organic face wash here costs $4.99, instead of the $7.99 most drugstores charge.
Another option is the new Wal-Mart. The Wal-Mart Express located at 3636 N. Broadway Ave. opened just a month ago, and it has become very popular with Lakeview residents. It is smaller than most regular Wal-Marts, but almost anything from cosmetics to produce can be found here.
Cristy Sanchez lives near Clark and Fullerton and frequently shops at the new Wal-Mart.
"It is nice having a store that I can buy all that I need at once."
For those who like to fulfill all of their shopping needs at one store, Target is another great option. In addition to clothing, appliances and entertainment, Target also has its own extensive grocery selection—from produce to snack foods to frozen meals.
Another perk to grocery shopping at Target is that you can buy some products in bulk to limit the number of trips to the grocery store and reduce your grocery bill.
Before taking the easy way out and spending more money at Dominick's, try out another grocery store for a new selection and better price.
